Jinchul Hong

Partner

“I enjoy applying my extensive engineering background on a daily basis, as a patent professional, by helping our clients.”

Jinchul is a patent attorney at AMPACC, representing clients on a broad range of complex technologies. He has drafted a number of new applications relating to analog and digital circuits, power systems, and semiconductor manufacturing process. Jinchul has also prepared hundreds of responses related to electric circuits, display devices, image processing, internet-related software, communication systems, optical devices, new materials, renewable energy systems, automotive parts, and ship components.

Jinchul’s broad knowledge and experience with complex technologies enable effective counseling and representation in emerging technologies. Some examples of the emerging technologies that Jinchul has worked on are a smart-car system including automotive electromechanical components, and components for the Internet of Things (IoT).
Before becoming a patent professional, Jinchul’s extensive professional experience as a research engineer includes display technologies, optics, and material science. As a professional, Jinchul developed mass production of next generation liquid crystal display (LCD) substrate glass. One of his responsibilities was to study technical publications of competitors, including patents, to identify ways to differentiate the products he was developing from competing products. In doing so, he realized the importance of having a strong patent portfolio to protect technologies. This positive experience inspired his professional journey into the exciting field of patent law.
During his undergraduate studies at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT, Jinchul mastered various subjects including computer programming, conventional and renewable energy systems, electrical circuits, micro-electro-mechanical system devices, and semiconductor manufacturing processes. As a student at the University of Washington School of Law, Jinchul was a member of Technology Law Society and graduated with a concentration in Intellectual Property.
Jinchul was awarded the Excellent Knowledge Worker Award by Samsung Corning Precision Materials for his contribution in creating new manufacturing processes and for efficiently communicating the improved processes with other engineers.
In his free time, Jinchul reads novels, poems, and essays to explore a world different from technology and law. His favorite writers are Leo Tolstoy and Young-hee Chang (a Korean writer).
